Isherwood's very human autobiographical story parallels the tale that emerged in the 2 companion novels "Mr. Norris Changes Trains" and "Goodbye to Berlin" and was dramatised via the play "I Am A Camera" into the musical "Cabaret". Drawn by the sexual freedoms of Weimar Berlin, Christopher abandons his studies to join his friend W H Auden. He is befriended by Jean Ross, a nightclub singer living across the hallway of his cheap tenement. Soon he falls in love with Heinz, a young German who he realises he has to save from the Nazis.
